TWO END PIECES FROM PARCEL
END PIECE FROM TAPE ROLL

24A-1 ON LEFT, 21A ON RIGHT
PHYSICAL MATCH OF ADHESIVE
TAPE
|
Part
of the Forensic Identification Section function is to compare common
materials such as adhesive tapes used to wrap parcels containing
contraband materials. One such investigation provided a parcel
containing illegal drugs wrapped in paper and clear adhesive tape. Two
tape ends were located and removed, and a roll of tape of similar
type to that used on the parcel was seized from the suspected
supplier.
The top
left photo shows the two tape ends from the parcel. For each
piece, the scale is next to the tape end found on the parcel.
The top
right photo shows the tape end from the suspect’s roll, again with
the scale next to the end found on the roll. |
|
The bottom
photo shows the two ends in close proximity. It is obvious
that the roll of tape had not been cut by a tape dispenser or a
blade of some sort, but instead it had been cut by using one's teeth
to start the tear. The procedure then created a jagged tear as
shown, with the two ends matching exactly once beyond the deformity
caused by the initial tooth tear. One can see what is likely
an impression of a tooth on both pieces of tape at the top edge of
the bottom photo.
Fingerprint examination of the paper provided identifiable prints
from the suspect. This actual case file occurred prior to the
use of DNA evidence, but today there would be a good chance of
retrieving DNA evidence from the suspect having torn the tape with
his teeth. |
